As the boys’ 2023 soccer season comes to an end, the varsity team has a lot to be proud of. Throughout the fall soccer season, DePaul College Prep had a successful year with many accomplishments and improvements compared to previous seasons.
The team ended with a record of 13 wins, 6 losses, and 3 ties. The boys started the season strong with the movement from the 1A to 2A division, as well as the change from the white to blue division. This was a major jump because there were higher ranked and bigger schools that challenged the team in terms of competition.
Head coach Tim O’Reilly stated, “The boys were really happy with their record.” Even though there was a change in competition, the boys put in their best efforts to prove their skills, which paid off in the end.
For a young private school like DePaul Prep, this was initially worrisome as the players and coaches were unsure of what the upcoming season would look like. Their worries were later relieved as the season began with their first place win in the Ridgewood tournament and continuous victories.
They then continued their winning streak by winning the super sectional game and the regional championship, which was a first for DePaul College Prep. O’Reilly credits their wins to their great team culture and togetherness as a team. The boys always had each other’s backs and worked well together on the field.
Sophomore and varsity player Harrison Mellon shared that theseason went very well. He too, believed that the boys on the team improved in skill level from last year. In the long run though, the hard work paid off. Even though the team didn’t succeed in one of their goals, which was winning the Catholic League Championship, they were proud of how far they got into the season and were excited to go even further next year.
The coaches feel confident moving forward into the 2024 season, as many of their players are going to be returning and picking up right where they left off.
Although they did not accomplish their goal of making it to State, the team feels confident that with more practice and conditioning they will be well prepared for the next season.
The number of returning players contributes to the overall success of the team, as relationships will grow and the team will continue to support each other.
“I’m most proud of the boys coming together as a group to build a great team,” O’Reilly shared. “I’m excited to see what next year’s season has to offer.”
