As this year comes to a close many students are looking forward to summer plans and time off. However at the Ram Page, members are saddened by the loss of senior staff members who have been an essential part of the club, and are moving on to college. As the seniors look forward to their next adventure, they shared how they feel about going to college and what they will miss about the Ram Page.
Riley Klich is co-editor in chief of the Ram Page and is attending the University of Notre Dame. She joined the club during her sophomore year. She joined because “It was something new and I wanted to be a part of that,” Klich stated. “I definitely learned time management skills because I used to start too late and it would push my whole article back.” She said she also picked up interviewing skills from writing her articles. Klich’s favorite article was her article on the field hockey team, as she got to interview her friends and one of her favorite teachers who is the coach.
Zoe Essex is also co- editor in chief of the Ram Page and is attending St. Mary’s college in Indiana. She joined the Ram Page at the beginning of her junior year. She stated “I thought it would be an opportunity to try something new.” Essex stated that her writing skills have improved from her time on the Ram Page. She said her favorite memory and article are from the time she was able to interview Sister Helen Prejean.
Lucia Fries is attending Syracuse University. She joined the Ram Page last year. Fries stated, “I have always really liked writing and had Mrs. Galvez as my AP LANG teacher, and she convinced me to join.”
Fries also picked up time management skills from the paper, but her favorite memory is going to Northwestern with others from the paper. She said, “being able to go to an actual college campus that’s great for journalism and being able to talk to these people and students especially during the college process was super helpful.”
Fries’ favorite article was the one she wrote about the scholarship in honor of her sister. She stated, “I didn’t propose the idea initially, but I emailed Mrs. Galvez later and she was really open to it.”
Estie Katz is attending George Washington University. She also joined the Ram Page last year. She said, “I saw the table at the club fair and signed up. I never had Mrs. Galvez as a teacher, but I really liked the way she was leading the club.” Katz stated that, “My favorite memory was when I had written a feature on Mr.Powers, and I went to the library to get a photo of him and we had a little photo shoot.”
Katz said she learned how to write her articles in a more formal way from her time on the Ram Page. She said her favorite article was the article she wrote about Kairos. She said it was her favorite because “there was so much secrecy involved and I had to work around it, but in the end it worked out really well.”
Noreen Meyer is attending Indiana University. Mayer joined the Ram Page in her sophomore year after the lockdown due to Covid. She joined because she wasn’t interested in an organized sport, and wanted to find her place in the community.
Meyer stated, “I’ve always thought that Mrs. Galvez was a great teacher and I’ve always liked writing.” She said what will stick with her the most from the Ram Page are the time management skills she has picked up along the way, and the conferences she’s had with Galvez. She stated, “they really stuck with me and influenced me to put in the work.”
Meyer stated that her favorite articles she has written have been her sports articles. She said, “At the beginning I didn’t want to do any sports articles because I just wasn’t a sports fan, but through doing these articles I discovered that I wanted to do sports journalism.”
Ellie Glunz is attending University of Denver. She joined the Ram Page during her junior year. She said, “I was convinced by my friend who told me to join the club, so I did it.” She said she learned a lot about how to reach out and interview others. Glunz stated, “My favorite memories are making friends while I have been a member of the club, and our meetings.” Her favorite article that she’s written was her article on why Fresh should be a free period. Glunz stated, “It was a great way to get students’ voices out there.”
Ram Page moderator and English teacher Liz Galvez has taught many of the seniors who are on the newspaper and stated that “they helped make the newspaper something.”
All the members stated that they hoped for the club to continue to grow and gain more members as the years go on. Their articles have set the tone for the next groups of members, and the newsroom won’t be the same without their positive energy at the Friday morning meetings. Good luck to all our senior staff, the Ram Page staff wishes you good luck as you embark on your college journey.
