Each year in early December, Spotify users eagerly await their yearly Spotify Wrapped. The wrapped details music listening habits from throughout the year and top artists. It is common to post results on Instagram or Snapchat stories. However, many people end up avoiding posting.
Why, you may ask? Some feel that their results are ’embarrassing’ or do not correctly reflect what they had been listening to that year. However, even though these results are varied, according to DePaul Prep students, Spotify wrapped will remain popular.
Caitlin Torio, a senior at DePaul Prep, has been using Spotify for the past four years. She started using the app because “it’s free and I don’t have to pay for a subscription.” Torio said she didn’t know about wrapped until 2023, but since then has been excited to see what ends up on her wrapped. Her top artists were SZA, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat and Olivia Rodrigo. “I think that my Wrapped was pretty accurate because these were the singers that I listened to every day.” she said.
While the app was accurate, Torio hopes that next year Spotify will show which artists were your number one each month, so it’s clear which are your top five artists.
Kiki Novakovic, a junior at DePaul Prep has been using Spotify since second grade. She started using the app because “it actually caters to music I like and the functionality is so much better, and the app is more reliable.”
While she thinks the statistics given on the app are accurate, they are a bit wild. Her top artists were Taylor Swift, Noah Kahan, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo and One Direction.
Although the majority of her list was accurate, Novakovic was confused seeing Olivia Rodrigo on her list because she didn’t really listen to her at all last year. The same goes for One Direction, as she had listened to them but not frequently enough for them to end up on her Wrapped.
Novakovic thinks that Spotify needs to look at recent playlists and pay closer attention to the music trends a person displays, and how the genres change throughout the year. “I hope next year the Wrapped is more precise and not just focused on the songs that are pushed from the Spotify recommended playlists.” she said.
Elle Wielgopolan is also a senior at DePaul Prep. She began using Spotify four years ago because it was easier to use than other carriers when making playlists and listening to podcasts, and all of her friends used it.
Wielgopolan said that her Wrapped used to be much more accurate but in this past year her Wrapped did not reflect what she listened to at all. This past year her top artists were Lucki, Ken Carson, Drake, Zach Bryan, and Destroy Lonely.
In her opinion, this wasn’t accurate because she barely listened to Drake this year, yet he was her #3 artist of the year. Wielgopolan said “I feel like they [spotify] are factoring bigger artists over smaller ones, like last year Taylor Swift was my #3 and I barely listened to her music.” She hopes that in the coming years smaller artists get a chance to be shown in Wrapped so that they can get more recognition.
