At DePaul College Prep, “Senior Night” stands as one of the school’s most memorable athletic traditions. Held annually across all sports, the event honors senior athletes who have dedicated years of commitment, leadership, and teamwork to their programs. What once began as a simple recognition, has now turned into one of the most cherished moments of a student’s athletic experience, acknowledging growth of all players.
In recent years, Senior Night has grown in both size and significance. Coaches, teammates, and families gather to honor athletes who have shaped their program, not only through their skills, but presence as well. For many seniors, the moment feels like a culmination of everything they have accomplished through their sport. Years of early practices, tournaments, bus rides, and traditions suddenly feel worth it as they hear their names called to be recognized.
For senior field hockey player Josie Shear, the moment felt surreal. After four years on the team, she said finally walking out on Senior Night made everything feel real. “It was honestly so overwhelming that I was now the senior walking out when I had been watching from the stands all those years,” Shear said. “It really hit me how far we have come as a team.”
Athletes from every sport look forward to this throughout their time at DePaul. The school works to make sure each celebration feels personal and meaningful, incorporating many beloved traditions that add to the experience. Posters featuring each senior line the football field, social media posts highlight their accomplishments, and custom gift baskets are given to every player. These additions show appreciation for the seniors’ dedication and contribution to their team.
This same mix of emotion and energy carried through to other teams as well. For captain Lauren Herman on the golf team, Senior Night was, “One of her favorite experiences she had on the team.”
As the ceremonies continue throughout fall, winter, and spring sports, each Senior Night carries its own personalized additions. With parents playing a huge role in the evening as well, each team adds its own touches. Whether its family members walking their athletes across the field or handmade posters, every moment is incorporated to show some sense of appreciation.
For senior field hockey player Olivia Tray, the night felt extra emotional. One of her gifts was a picture frame with a handwritten letter from one of the younger girls on the team. “It reminded me how supported I’ve been these past three years and the impact I have had on others,” Tray said.
Senior Night ultimately serves as a meaningful reminder of how sports can shape an athlete’s high school experience beyond simple wins and losses. The celebration highlights friendships built, challenges one has overcome, and the overall pride of being on a varsity sport. By the end of the night, seniors leave knowing their hard work has mattered and their presence is strong.
